For over 35 years McCloskey & Company has prided ourselves in bringing unique process solutions to our customers. Over the last several years, though our participation in the Central Florida Chapter of AICHE, we have gotten to know the folks at Kimre. Kimre is the premiere provider of acid mist control equipment. When it came time to meet and talk about us representing them, Joe McCloskey and Gene Jenkins flew to Miami and drove down to Homestead. We have been familiar with their mist eliminators and their candle filters in demanding processes throughout our territory.

A company’s culture is as important to us at McCloskey & Company as their product, when Joe and Gene met the Kimre folks it was obvious it was a meeting of kindred spirits. Mary Keenan and her team of professionals besides their technical expertise blends well with our team creating a great synergy.

McCloskey & Company Inc. are proud to announce a new partnership with Tempest Engineering. Located in Cleveland, OH, Tempest Engineering prides itself on balancing industrial process temperature control. For over 35 years Tempest Engineering has been custom engineering industrial refrigeration and heat transfer systems for customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, rubber, oil & gas, food & beverage, testing laboratory, and ice arena industries.

The McCloskey team of Joe McCloskey, Gene Jenkins and Stephen Baxter recently visited the Tempest Engineering facility in Cleveland, OH to see their facility first-hand and to better learn about their engineering capabilities.

  • Moved 3 times to accommodate growth
  • Design, Build, Test, Startup, and Service Capabilities
  • Engineering: Mechanical, Electrical, Value Eng., New Product Development.

The photograph above shows the inside of their 70,000 sq.ft. facility that is fully equipped with four 15-ton overhead bridge cranes and a 28 ft. under hook lifting capability (no project is too large for these guys). While touring the facility we were able to photograph and discuss a few projects Tempest Engineering is currently working on:

E3:ICE (INDUSTRIAL CHILLER EQUIPMENT):

Picture
E3:ICE: 200 Ton Ice Rink Chiller –this an ammonia industrial chiller system that will service two (2) sheets in one arena. Tempest has been servicing and building ice arena equipment for over 30 years. Tempest also supplies Dehumidification Systems to keep the arena air quality at the perfect dew point. All controlled through an Allen Bradley Compact Logix PLC with proprietary software from Tempest engineering.

Picture
E3:ICE: Containerized Outdoor Systems – this particular containerized system will be located outside of food processing manufacturers facility that is making pizza dough.

It’s important to note that Tempest Engineering has the capability to build and design containerized systems for a variety of applications and facilities that are looking to free up floor space to support production expansion projects.

E3:TCU (TEMPERATURE CONTROL UNITS):

Picture
E3:TCU – this unit is designed for a customer that has rubber mixing processes. This TCU is rated for 200F warmup, is split into separate zones, and is fully furnished with a Rockwell-engineered PLC and control panel.

It’s important to note that Tempest Engineering has been designing and building TCU/TCM’s for many applications.  These are robust industrial units that are designed to be in service for 20-30 years.

Tempest also designs and builds combination Chiller/TCU System that can span a temperature range from
-40°F to 250°F process fluid. Other applications range from -100°F chillers to 700°F Hot Fluid Units.

After touring the Tempest Engineering facility and seeing their equipment first-hand we sat down with their team to better understand their business. During this afternoon meeting we learned several interesting things about Tempest Engineering:

They have a full-service, in-house engineering team that drives the company embrace their role of providing custom engineered solutions rather than simply an order/quote shop. They approach every project with the same foundational approach, the FOCESS Engineering Approach. They believe that a successfully engineered system can only be achieved if they know the functional and performance specifications of the process/applications, and business/process objectives that need to be met, and the business/process concerns that need to be overcome.

They have two branded engineered systems – E3:ICE and E3:TCU. E3:ICE is their product line for Industrial Chiller Equipment, serving customers that need industrial chilling for their processes and applications. They specialize in engineering industrial refrigeration equipment for low and ultra-low applications. Tempest Engineering classifies low temperature chilling to include temperatures ranging between 20F and -20F and ultra-low temperature chilling to include temperatures ranging between -20F and -100F.

Their second engineered system is the E3:TCU, designed for customers that need temperature control units for applications requiring hotter processes and applications up to 700F. They have the capability to manufacture both hot water or hot oil TCU systems.

We look forward to building a continued, long term relationship with Tempest Engineering, leveraging their custom engineered systems to benefit the needs of our customers. Do you have a process/application that requires specific temperature control? Let’s talk!

The Mersen Advantage for Graphite Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers

9/15/2017

Graphite shell and tube heat exchangers have long been used in the most demanding processes. Mersen (formerly Carbone of America) has been an industry leader and expert in the design and manufacture of graphite heat exchangers for over 50 years.
Picture
Due to graphite’s superior corrosion resistance, optimal thermal conductivity, and mechanical durability, you will often find graphite shell and tube heat exchangers used as heaters, coolers, condensers, falling-film coolers, or evaporators and absorbers, especially in the treatment of extremely corrosive media (e.g. HCl, Sulphuric acid, Phosphoric acid, Hydrofluoric acid, halogenated hydrocarbons, etc.).

In such critical applications, reliability and efficiency is imperative. Understanding this, Mersen has designed its tubes for these units up to ~22 foot lengths, compared to 14’ tubes found elsewhere in the market. This allows for a seamless tube instead of spliced tubes for longer units, avoiding a common leak-point and breaking point entirely.

PictureCarbon-wrapped graphite tubes provide extra tensile strength in crucial applications

Our graphite tubes are available in wrapped configurations, that offer superior resistance to thermal shock, and unwrapped configurations, which have more outstanding heat transfer properties.

Mersen heat exchangers are industry-known for their ease of maintenance, along with unmatched repair capabilities at our new dedicated repair facility in Salem, VA and the longstanding repair shop in Gonzales, LA.

Through years of experience with industry leaders in the most extreme applications, Mersen has proven itself to be a knowledgeable and trusted partner. McCloskey & Company is proud of our decades long relationship with Mersen. Please contact us anytime (info@mccloskeyinc.com), and work with the graphite heat exchanger experts on your next corrosive application.

This year, we once again had the opportunity to participate in the annual AIChE Central Florida chapter's International Phosphate Fertilizer and Sulfuric Acid Technology Conference.

The folks in this chapter truly run a great program. There is a spirited camaraderie that extends to vendors, competitors, non-engineers, and families alike -- which is unique to any conference we participate in. The presentations and programs were technically informative, interesting, and fun...and now we know why the Central Florida chapter of AIChE is one of the organization's shining stars.

Special thanks to Lian Blackwelder, Justin Graff, and the other Board members, as well as all the AIChE members and volunteers that helped make this such a successful event.

Gene Jenkins and Joe McCloskey exhibited with Shane Nicholson & John Francka of Gilbert Industries and Drew Sholar & Wayne Moroz from Mersen, with participation from Matt Thayer at Koch Knight.

All three principals agree with us wholeheartedly this is a must-do event/conference annually. Thanks to all for a great weekend and see y'all in Clearwater in next year!

Gilbert Industries - A Leading Stainless Steel Tank Fabricator
McCloskey & Company is proud of our longstanding relationship with Gilbert Industries. Part of our partnership with our customers is to inform and anticipate bumps in the road in raw materials prices, and therefore finished products. This helps bring our customers’ projects in on-budget and on-time.

Obviously no one can predict the future, and sources are mixed as to which direction and magnitude the stainless steel surcharge will move. We are receiving multiple indicators that 1st Quarter pricing of stainless will be on the rise. The charts below (from various sources) are a few examples of this volatility. Regardless of how the market plays out, we wanted to keep our customers aware of the uncertainty.

"Black Gold": Refurbishing Graphite Heat Exchangers with Mersen

9/26/2016

Picture
When we think of black gold, most minds immediately wander to oil. The folks at McCloskey and Company and Mersen have a little different perspective! Our hidden treasure isn’t found deep in the ground—maybe just deep under weeds in the scrapyards and lay-down areas of shops and plants across the country.
Picture
Look familiar? Let us help. Instead of throwing away or scrapping the unit, why not consider a rebuild? At first glance it might be hard to believe…
Picture
… but these pieces of equipment can be refurbished to like-new condition using Mersen’s two graphite repair shops.
Picture
Picture
We have a dedicated repair facility in Gonzalez, LA (Mersen GRI) as well as full repair capabilities at our factory in Salem, VA. Our factory-trained staff can turn even the most problem-filled unit into one that functions again as good as new, typically at a cost well below that of a new unit.

Mersen holds the industry-coveted graphite code stamps, both “R” and “U”, and handles hundreds of graphite heat exchanger repairs annually.

For shell and tube units, the repair process can include replacement and/or plugging of tubes, as well as a new tube sheet. Block units are re impregnated and completely cleaned and bored out. We’ll also handle any cosmetic work that needs to be done on the unit, such as metal repair, blasting/painting, and re-gasketing.  We’ve seen it all as far as specs go!

Those who work with graphite know it's fragile characteristics, and at Mersen, we know how to ship graphite – our dedicated providers have years of experience transporting graphite equipment.

With a warranty comparable to a new unit, you can trust Mersen for the best graphite repairs in the industry. Let us turn that piece of junk back into a gold mine!
